The Feast of the Assumption or Assumption of Mary is one of the most important religious holidays for Catholics and Orthodox Christians worldwide. And it’s only a few short weeks away! The Feast of the Assumption is a festival of plenty when it comes to food. People celebrate with feasts unlike any other, with delicious sauces like Traditional Toum, a creamy garlic dipping sauce often paired with grilled meats and roasted vegetables, included.
Origin of The Assumption
The celebration of Our Lady’s Assumption into Heaven takes place on August 15, a holy day of obligation for Christians all over the globe. This day has many names following Eastern Orthodox tradition, like the Dormition or The Sleeping of Our Lady. It is a name day celebration for all women named Mary, Maria, or Marie; the most often used names given to females throughout history among Christian women.
In essence, this suggests that everyone is invited to the feast since everyone has at least one family member or acquaintance who has the name in question. This ancient feast of food, plenty and abundance is essentially a rite of passage into the approaching cold and barren months. The Assumption of Mary is an official holiday in many Christian nations. It’s a time for family and community gatherings, which are often associated with the consumption of celebratory foods.
Why Traditional Toum?
When we take out or cater meals for holidays or celebrations, the star of the show isn’t the Chicken Shawarma or Grilled combination dishes – it’s the rich garlic sauce, toum.
Toum is a Lebanese culinary classic that is more than simply a condiment. This garlic sauce is excellent for mixing soups and noodles, marinating poultry, and tossing roasted vegetables. It gives a lively punch of garlic to everything without the effort of peeling and mincing. It’s also a flavorful vegan alternative to mayo that brightens up any sandwich. With just four ingredients and a food processor required to create Toum, there’s no reason you can’t live beyond the confines of a few two-ounce containers.
- l 1 cup garlic cloves (4 1/2 ounces; 130g)
- l 2 teaspoons Diamond Crystal kosher salt (for table salt, use 1 teaspoon)
- l 1/4 cup (60g) fresh juice from about 2 lemons, divided
- l 1/4 cup (60g) ice water, divided
- l 3 cups (600g) neutral oil, such as grapeseed or canola, divided
